As a volunteer tutor at Goleta Valley Junior High, I helped lead a weekly study hour for seventh and eighth grade students in the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program. This program provides additional study time for students looking to excel or catch up in their courses, with a focus on math and the sciences.
During COVID-19 pandemic, I also worked as a remote tutor for the same group, creating lesson plans for review of prior concepts as well as introduction of new material. Given that the pandemic was a traumatic time for us all, the primary aim of our sessions was to assist in the adjustment to distance learning and prevent younger students from falling behind during the remote schooling era.
While a student at the College of San Mateo, I took on the role of peer math tutor in both the primary campus Learning Center and the smaller Math Resource Center. This involved reinforcing concepts and guiding problem-solving sessions through the 16-week spring session and accelerated 6-to-8-week summer session.
After studying through the courses myself, my aim was to assist my peers in topics such as calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics. Because the California Community College system strives to offer accessible education for all, I prioritized picking up on the learning styles of each student, while also adapting to accommodate and satisfy individual needs.
